I read with fascination a commentary from the London Times. This commentary was published right after the Presidential election. It is a view of America that is not flattering at all. Unfortunately, we cannot flatter ourselves. We have a very divided country. The coasts and part of the midwest still contain progressive elements. However, the center is bent on reaction. They want to return to an America that unfortunately never existed. The Republicans do not even stand for its classic ideals and beliefs in smaller government. This President and his cohorts want a bigger government. They want this big government to control the moral behavior of the American people. Their goal is very simple. They want to eradicate what they view to be immorality. Now they feel they can dispose of abortion and gays. A right-wing colleague of mine said recently that after these four years, gays will be back in the closet and the door will be locked forever. He went on to say that 100 years ago, America had no homosexuals or lesbians. It is sad that someone like this believes in such a fantasy. If he really understood what he was saying, this young man would be very scared because I recall similar things being said in Nazi Germany about my own people.
